About A&B

IMG 3778At Angus and Bens our Home-grown philosophy is about growing great tasting fruit, packed full to the brim with natural goodness. Our orchard management practices are all about working with nature, on our fantastic soils and temperate climate, to get healthier fruit that taste better. We don’t aim to have perfect looking skins on our fruit, to do this we would need to kill off all the insects in our orchards. Our orchards are full of beneficial insects that do quite a good job at controlling the badies that like to damage our fruit. We also don’t compromise fruit flavour for fruit yields. Healthy soils grow healthy trees that produce healthy great tasting fruit.

IMG 6691 Inspired by Angus and Ben Pollock, two cheeky boys who love good fruit but quickly turn their nose up at fruit that isn’t sweet and full of flavour; they know what good fruit tastes like. The boys wanted to have a roadside fruit stall, and this is where it all started. Angus and Ben are our Chief taste testers for Mandarins and Feijoas (they’re not so keen on doing taste tests on Lemons, Limes and Yuzu). Angus and Ben’s fruit is now available right across New Zealand from our online store.

In New Zealand we can grow some of the best flavoured fruit in the world. For example, it is internationally accepted, that Gisborne Navel Oranges are the best tasting Navels of any growing region in the world. Today, commercial citrus production focuses on perfect looking fruit and high yields; unfortunately this means fruit isn’t left on the tree to fully ripen, and the increased use of fertilisers also further reduces the intensity of flavour in the fruit. The result of this is that people eat less fruit. That’s why you should get your fruit from Angus and Ben’s.

Angus and Ben’s is a family business based on our farm “Brookfield Park” at Muriwai in Gisborne. Our Orchard trees are nestled along the banks and terraces of the Maraetaha river. The property (which was part of a larger sheep and beef station previously) was purchased in 2001 and in 2004 the first orchard plantings began. Since then more orchards have been added on the river terraces, intermingled with riparian plantings of a wide range of tree species. The mix of trees provides shelter and a diverse habitat for bees and other insects that all have an important part to play.

We are passionate about producing great tasting healthy fruit without a whole lot of chemicals and pride ourselves on the flavour we get into our fruit, and we hope you enjoy the Angus and Ben’s difference.
